An open letter to the Fashion Police

Dear Fashion Police,

I am writing this as Oscars is coming up and I love the Oscars. The glamourous ball gowns! The tuxedos! The selfies! Gorgeous actors and even more gorgeous actresses! What’s not to love? Well there is one thing I do not love – Fashion Police. I don’t love how you guys come together and rip apart talented actresses based not only upon their fashion choices, but their body types too. I don’t love how instead of celebrating these talented successful women, you make fun of their ‘flaws’. What you’re doing ain’t entertainment, it is pure bullying! It’s like being back at school where women publicly shame other women based on their looks. This is bullying covered in Hollywood glamour! What happened to celebrating other women’s success and being happy for them? What happened to sisterhood?

Out of all the mean moments, the one that shocked and unsettled me the most was when you poked fun at Elsa Pataky (The gorgeous wife of dreamy Thor – Chris Hemsworth) and her baby bump, calling it a “beer belly” and saying she looked “huge”. Well newsflash! She was PREGNANT with twins! Being pregnant is a sensitive period for any women, especially when you have no control over your body. Poking fun over her dress is one thing, but poking fun about her body (while pregnant!!) is another, it is NOT fun nor entertaining! It’s just pure mean girls!

I personally believe that Fashion Police represents everything that is wrong with society. Not only do you guys make it seem okay to judge and bring women down, you also highlight the unrealistic beauty standards women face every day. You regularly point out that you have to have the right body to pull off a look and you refuse to acknowledge and accept that women come in all shape and sizes! Fat shaming is not okay!

You may argue that it’s all fun and games but last time I checked mean comments, pointing out body flaws and hurting someone’s feelings on purpose is called bullying. Do you even think about all the young girls watching your show? And how you guys are setting a wrong example for those young girls? Sure I understand that fashion is very important to Hollywood, half the industry wouldn’t exist without the brands and clothes, but when did it become okay to publicly criticize women based on their looks? Fashion is fashion, everybody has different tastes, that’s what makes fashion so interesting. So why not just judge the clothes without fat-shaming? Why do you have to make women feel bad about themselves?

My hope is that one day we as a society will accept all body types and admire all fashion choices made by beautiful women instead of publicly criticizing them.

Until then,

Sincere Regards,

B
